Here’s the official press release from Chrysler in full:

All-new Dodge Journey Crossover Provides Room to Grow

    * All-new Dodge Journey revealed at 2007 International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt
* Something for any journey: segment-defining crossover delivers versatility, safety, child friendliness, loads of storage, cargo and seating flexibility, as well as all-weather driving capability
* With a bold, sporty design, new fun-to-drive Journey continues Dodge brand’s global expansion

Auburn Hills, Mich., Aug 26, 2007 - Dodge designers and engineers have answered the needs of the global passenger car market, as well as the needs of individual drivers, and delivered the all-new Dodge Journey: a global vehicle that meets life’s changing demands by offering a unique combination of versatility and flexibility in a sporty, sexy package. This all-new vehicle takes the practicality of a minivan, the capability of a sport-utility vehicle (SUV) and the overall efficiency of a passenger car and blends all the best attributes of each into an all-new “right-sized” crossover for the Dodge brand.

“The all-new Dodge Journey gives our customers the entire package,” said Michael Manley, Executive Vice President – International Sales, Marketing and Business Development, Chrysler. “With its unique combination of purposeful versatility and bold, youthful styling, this new vehicle from Dodge delivers safety, quality and reliability at a great value. Journey also blends innovative technology, entertainment features and useful storage, all wrapped together with an attitude that can only be Dodge.”

The Dodge Journey is built on the company’s global D-segment platform and is designed to meet the needs of customers ranging from young singles, couples and families with small children to mature families who want the flexibility to do more in terms of seating people or storing gear. Clever, flexible seating and storage combinations include standard five-passenger seating with spacious cargo room and available 5+2 seating, for times when additional passengers are along on the journey. Spacious storage bins, hidden in the floor and under the front passenger seat cushion, combined with a variety of fuel-efficient and powerful powertrain options, make Dodge Journey flexible, functional and fun-to-drive.

Safety also is at the top of mind for customers, and the Dodge Journey delivers with standard multi-stage front driver and passenger air bags, front-seat-mounted side air bags, three-row side-curtain air bags, standard four-wheel disc anti-lock brakes (ABS), standard Electronic Stability Program (ESP), standard Electronic Roll Mitigation, an available back-up camera and available all-wheel drive (AWD) in the United States and Canada.

The 2009 model-year Dodge Journey will be available in U.S. dealerships with both five-passenger and available 5+2 seating in SE, SXT and R/T models in the first quarter of 2008 and in global volume markets outside North America in both left-hand and right-hand drive, starting in mid-2008.

Bold, Powerful Proportions with Edgy Lines Evoke SUV Capability
Journey is unmistakably Dodge, with powerful, muscular exterior styling cues that evoke the capable look associated with SUVs.

“The Journey combines the bold attitude of Dodge with excellent interior versatility designed to satisfy buyers’ rapidly changing demands,” said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President – Design. “Journey is the perfect right-sized vehicle for people who want the prestige of an SUV, but need the functionality and utility of a minivan.”

From the front, the signature Dodge crosshair chrome grille with the Dodge Ram’s head stamped in the center hammers home the Dodge brand message that Journey is bold, powerful and capable. Modern-looking quad halogen headlamps provide excellent road lighting. Available fascia-mounted fog lamps strengthen the contemporary look and help boost visibility during bad weather. Body-color fascias provide a monochromatic look that neatly frames the chrome crosshair grille and headlamps.

Dodge Journey boasts available 19-inch wheels and tires, which set it apart from the rest of the crossover pack. From the side view, Dodge Journey’s horizontal aluminum hood, long daylight opening and low-gloss black appliqués on the B- and C-pillars give the appearance of a long greenhouse. Sculpted wheel arches emphasize Journey’s sporty, athletic appearance. Dodge Journey’s beltline is more angled in front, but less so toward the rear, mimicking the top of the tail lamp shape, which makes it easier for rear-seat passengers to see out the windows — a bonus for pint-sized passengers. An available high-contrast black roof rack with buffed stainless steel roof rails adds capability and completes Journey’s side view.

The Dodge Journey’s rear view elicits as much excitement as the front. The Journey’s single piece, lightweight liftgate includes an integrated spoiler that delivers improved aerodynamics. An LED center high mounted stop lamp (CHMSL) is mounted in the liftgate header above the glass. Like the integrated spoiler above it, the outer surface of the CHMSL is styled for aerodynamics. Four-piece jeweled red tail lamps span the width of both the liftgate and the body and feature unique curves that give the Journey added style and sportiness. The rear glass on the liftgate’s lower edge follows the curvature of the tail lamps to improve visibility through the rear window. Extra shimmer that adds gleam to the Journey’s performance capability comes from the chrome-tipped dual exhausts, which are standard with the available 3.5-liter V-6 engine in North America.

The Dodge Journey adapts the company’s D-segment architecture also used on the 2008 model-year Dodge Avenger. However, Journey’s 113.8-inch (2890 mm) wheelbase is 4.9 in. (124 mm) longer than Avenger’s to accommodate its available 5+2 seating and additional cargo space.

Dodge Journey will be available in Inferno Red Crystal Pearl Coat, Light Sandstone Metallic Clear Coat, Melbourne Green Pearl Coat, Deep Water Blue Pearl Coat, Silver Steel Metallic Clear Coat, Bright Silver Metallic Clear Coat, Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl Coat and Stone White Clear Coat.

Spacious Interior Room for the Entire Journey
A key target for the Dodge Journey’s design team was delivering a practical, flexible interior, with seating and innovative storage features typically only found in a minivan, and the final product delivers.

Dodge Journey’s two-box exterior design means more room for seating people and storing gear on the interior. Journey offers a choice of two seating configurations to balance buyers’ needs for passenger seating and cargo room. Five-passenger seating is standard on all models, while 5+2-passenger seating is available on all models. The Journey’s available third row gives passengers 2 inches (51 mm) more head room than leading North American competitors.

Storing things “under the front seat” takes on an entirely new meaning, thanks to Journey’s available Flip ’N Stow™ in-seat storage. The Journey’s front passenger seat cushion flips forward to reveal a large 10.75 x 8.75-inch (273 x 222 mm) bin under the seat cushion. The bin is large enough to store a purse, umbrella, planner or headphones with the seat down. The seat cushion is hinged, and when flipped forward, provides access to the storage bin.

Dodge Journey’s rear doors open 90 degrees, making it easier for people to get in and out of the second row and gain access to the available third-row seat.

In the second row, the all-new Dodge Journey features theater seating, which gives passengers in the second and third row the ability to see outside the vehicle, which is especially helpful for keeping kids entertained on long drives. The second row H-point is 1.6 inches (40 mm) higher than the first row. The available third row sits another .6 inches (17 mm) higher than the second row and 2.2 inches (57 mm) higher than the first-row seats.

Located in the floor behind the front-row seats are two standard in-floor storage bins that are designed to hold 12, 12-oz. (330 ml) cans plus ice or other items conveniently out of sight. For added convenience, the bins feature latching lids and removable, washable liners, so they’re a snap to clean.

Additional thoughtful features that make Dodge Journey more flexible for families include a child presenter seat on all models that makes it easy for the driver to attend to a small child seated in the second row when the vehicle is stationary. The child presenter seat works by allowing the 60 percent portion of the 60/40 fold-flat second row seat to travel 2 inches (51 mm) forward. With the front passenger seat folded flat, the driver can easily reach to the back to assist a child in the second row.

Dodge Journey is the first vehicle in the mid-size crossover segment to offer available integrated child booster seats. These available seats boost a child seated in the second row 4 inches (102 mm) so they’re seated in the adult belted zone. This makes it easier for the child seated in the booster seat to see outside the vehicle. The booster seat is designed for children who are as much as 4 foot 9 inches (1.45 m) tall and between 48 lbs. (22 kg) and 85 lbs. (39 kg).

The second-row seats also move forward and rearward a total of 4.7 inches (120 mm) to give adults more leg room, bring children closer to the front seats and provide more cargo room behind the seats. Folding the second row and the available fold-flat front passenger seat flat creates plenty of room for hauling home lumber needed to assemble a playscape or skis from the slopes.

On five-passenger models, a tri-fold load floor is located behind the second-row seat and provides a hidden storage compartment for added utility. The load floor is reversible and configures into a “grocery bag” position. The primary side of the folding panel is carpeted for durability.

The available third-row seat is easy to operate and get into, thanks to Journey’s stadium Tip ’N Slide™ second-row seats. With the turn of a single lever on the side of the seat back, the seat cushions easily fold upward and the seat slides forward. Journey’s available 50/50-split-folding third-row seat provides enough room for two passengers on an as needed basis. The seatback reclines 6 degrees to make the ride even more comfortable. A rear in-floor hidden storage bin located behind the available third-row seat is standard on 5+2-passenger vehicles.

In addition to seating and storage features, Dodge Journey’s versatile and functional interior features a two-tone color scheme with high-contrast dark and light colors. A combination of Dark Slate Gray and Medium Slate Gray is available on SE models. A two-tone combination of Dark Slate Gray and Light Graystone or Dark Pebble Beige and Light Pebble Beige is available on SXT and R/T models. A premium soft-skin instrument panel provides a sense of quality and craftsmanship. Chrome accents the upper center bin latch, door handle, shifter bezel and door lock knobs and instrument cluster bezel. Journey R/T models add chrome touches on radio and climate control knobs.

The 2009 model-year Dodge Journey also features three types of seat upholstery: cloth is standard on the SE model, YES Essentials® stain-resistant, odor-resistant, anti-static seat fabric is available on the SE model and standard on the SXT model and leather is standard on the R/T model.

Powertrains Provide Efficiency, Flexibility, Fun-to-drive Factor
The front-wheel-drive Dodge Journey features a four-wheel independent front suspension with MacPherson struts and a multi-link rear suspension. Front and rear suspension crossmembers are isolated to the body to create a quiet ride, with less road noise, vibration and harshness. AWD is available on Dodge Journey models sold in the United States and Canada on vehicles equipped with the 3.5-liter V-6 engine. Four-wheel disc brakes are standard.

Dodge Journey features several different engine/transaxle combinations designed to meet the needs of the diverse mid-size crossover buyer. These include a fuel-efficient 2.4-liter four-cylinder World Engine, a Flexible Fuel Vehicle (FFV) 2.7-liter V-6 engine that can run on E-85, an available 3.5-liter V-6 engine coupled with a six-speed automatic transaxle with Auto Stick for the United States and Canada and a 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine equipped with a six-speed manual or automatic transaxle for markets outside North America.

Dodge Journey’s standard 2.4-liter World Engine provides an estimated fuel economy of 19 miles per gallon (mpg) in the city and 25 mpg on the highway (approximately 9 liters per 100 km on the European combined cycle), as well as solid, quiet performance. Journey’s 2.4-liter World Engine is coupled with a standard four-speed automatic transaxle in the United States and Canada, as well as a five-speed manual transaxle in most markets outside North America. It features dual variable valve timing, intake manifold flow control valves, acoustic cylinder head covers, dual counter-rotating balance shafts and an acoustic oil pan. Mated to a four-speed automatic transaxle, this engine produces 173 horsepower (129 kW) and 166 lb.-ft. (225 N•m) of torque.

Dodge Journey also features an available 2.7-liter V-6 engine, coupled with a four-speed automatic transaxle that is offered as an FFV in North America. The flex-fuel engine produces 186 horsepower (138 kW) and 191 lb.-ft. (259 N•m) of torque and delivers an estimated 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway (approximately 10 liters per 100 km on the European combined cycle). The Journey’s 2.7-liter engine with flexible fuel capability has the ability to operate effectively on any blend of gasoline and fuel-grade ethanol up to E-85. Outside North America, this 2.7-liter V-6 engine is coupled with a six-speed automatic transaxle.

Dodge Journey R/T and R/T AWD vehicles available in the United States and Canada feature a standard 3.5-liter V-6 engine that produces 235 horsepower (175 kW) and 232 lb.-ft. (315 N•m) of torque coupled with a six-speed automatic transaxle that comes standard with Auto Stick. This engine delivers an estimated 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. This 3.5-liter V-6 engine also is available on SXT models sold in the United States and Canada. The combination of the 3.5-liter V-6 engine coupled with the six-speed automatic transaxle delivers excellent performance and fuel efficiency, as well as quiet operation.

In markets outside North America, Dodge Journey offers a modern 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine available with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transaxle. This 16-valve diesel engine is a state-of-the-art direct-injection power plant with high-pressure fuel injection, a variable geometry turbocharger and four valves per cylinder. The injectors are electronically controlled for high power and torque output and optimal fuel efficiency. Maximum power is 140 horsepower DIN (103 kW), and peak torque is 229 lb.-ft. (310 N•m). The engine is expected to deliver excellent overall performance and fuel economy of under 7 liters per 100 km (European combined cycle). A diesel particulate filter is standard from the factory.

Six-speed Transaxle Provides Quick Acceleration, Quiet Ride
The 2009 model-year Dodge Journey R/T and R/T AWD models available in the United States and Canada, as well as 2.7-liter models sold outside North America, feature a standard six-speed automatic transaxle, which provides quicker standing-start acceleration than a four- or five-speed transaxle because of a numerically higher first-gear ratio. A more robust differential with increased torque capacity enhances launch performance by requiring less torque management, electronically limiting the torque that is available during the initial stages of standing-start acceleration. Smaller steps between ratios also make for a smoother, quieter ride, as the engine speed doesn’t change as much with each shift. In addition, more ratio choices, more appropriate ratios for quicker acceleration and a lower overall top gear ratio provide a quiet ride and improved fuel economy at highway speeds.

Dual-clutch Transaxle Technology Delivers Quick Acceleration, Refined Shift Quality and Improved Fuel Economy
The all-new Dodge Journey will be available with a new dual-clutch transaxle in markets outside of North America. This is the first application of this six-speed automatic transaxle, and it will be available with the 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine. It is expected to deliver a fuel economy improvement of as much as six percent compared with a conventional four-speed automatic transaxle.

Developed in partnership with Getrag, the new transaxle is equipped with two independent lay-shaft style gear sets with separate clutches, that use manual transaxle-based components. During shifts, the next gear is anticipated and pre-selected. One clutch is then opened while the other is closed, allowing shifting without torque interruption. The result is quicker acceleration, refined shift quality and improved fuel economy.

AWD Keeps All Four Wheels Planted
Dodge Journey SXT and R/T models sold in the United States and Canada equipped with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine also offer AWD capability. Journey’s all-wheel-drive system works on demand, driving only the front wheels until power to the rear wheels is needed. AWD also is used on dry pavement between speeds of 25 and 65 mph (40-105 km/h) to enhance handling during performance driving. This system provides added traction on snow, ice and other low-traction surfaces without having to be switched on and off.

Engineered to a High Safety Standard
From its high-strength structure to its active safety systems, Dodge Journey is designed and engineered to keep its occupants safe and secure. Standard safety equipment includes:

    * Advanced Multi-stage Front Air Bags provide nearly instantaneous occupant protection by matching air bag output to crash severity
* Low-risk Deployment Air Bags are included for smaller and out-of-position occupants
* Front Seat-mounted Side Air Bags deploy for enhanced thorax protection during a side impact
* Supplemental Side Air Bag Inflatable Curtains with Extended Up Time deploy down to provide all three rows vehicle occupant head protection during side impact
* Structural Driver and Front Passenger Knee Bolsters control occupant kinematics and reduce leg loads
* Available Child Booster Seats for children 4 foot 9 inches (1.45 m) tall and between 48 lbs. (22 kg) and 85 lbs. (39kg) raise the child into the adult belted zone
* Anti-lock brakes (ABS) modulate the brakes for the driver to provide steering control while braking
* Electronic Stability Program (ESP) applies selective braking or throttle reduction to control oversteer and understeer
* Brake Assist ensures maximum braking action during panic stops
* Traction Control reduces the throttle and/or applies selective braking to optimize traction during acceleration
* Electronic Roll Mitigation determines when the vehicle is in a potential roll over condition and applies appropriate braking force to reduce the likelihood that such an event will occur
* Rollover Sensing deploys seat-mounted side air bags, side-curtain air bags and seat-belt pretensioners
* Trailer Sway Control helps maintain vehicle and trailer system stability by applying selective braking
* Event Data Recorder records the nature of a malfunction or impact event for retrieval using a service diagnostic tool
* Available ParkView™ Rear Backup Camera displays the view behind the vehicle in the navigation display when backing up or parking
* Tire Pressure Monitoring (TPM) alerts drivers to low tire pressure(s) to facilitate safe handling
* Brake-park Interlock prevents automatic transaxle from being shifted out of Park or Neutral without first applying brakes
* Side Guard Door Beams in front and rear doors provide occupant protection in the event of a side impact

Dodge Brand
With a U.S. market share of 6 percent, Dodge is the best-selling brand for Chrysler and the fifth largest nameplate in the U.S. automotive market. In 2006, Dodge sold more than 1.3 million vehicles in the global market. Dodge continues to lead the minivan market with a 20 percent market share in the United States. In the highly competitive truck market, Dodge has a 15 percent market share.

Caliber spearheaded the Dodge brand’s expansion into Europe and other international volume markets in 2006, followed by the Nitro and Avenger in the 2007 calendar year. By adding the Dodge brand to its international portfolio, Chrysler aims to achieve 1.4 percent market share in Western Europe by 2009 — more than doubling the company’s share compared with 2005. With continued strong sales, Dodge could account for approximately 30 percent of sales for Chrysler outside North America by the end of 2009.

I attended the Chicagoland 2008 DaimlerChrysler Fleet Ride & Drive event today, and here’s a few quick observations and notes…

DCX took up THREE conference rooms at the Holiday Inn Select in Naperville, IL and the event was filled. Fleet sales is indeed a big chunk of business for the automakers.

More details and driving impressions after the jump…

They ran through a presentation about all the vehicles available for fleet sales and hit fleet-centric highlights for each one. More interesting to me was that some options that aren’t available in certain retail-spec models are available on fleet-spec models.

The fleet guys were seeing good success with the Avenger and Sebring in the corporate fleets. I noted that on the Avenger SE Fleet model, one can get the 2.7L V6 in either FFV or gas-only versions instead of the standard 2.4L World Engine - in retail-spec you have to move up to the SXT model to get the 2.7L V6 option.

Charger, 300, and Magnum were touted as holding their residual value better than the Ford Five Hundred or Chevy Impala - in the case of 2006 models with 60K miles, the Charger had almost $5000 more value over the Chevy Impala, and the 300 had almost $1800 more than the Charger. As in retail-spec, the Charger SE gets the 2.7L V6 as standard, with the 3.5L V6 as an option. The Magnum, however, doesn’t get that option - to get the 3.5L V6, you have to move up to the SXT.

The fleet guys are very excited about the new minivans, and were really disappointed when they couldn’t get one to bring to the event. They also mentioned here that, in an attempt to bolster residual values, they’ve cut back on the sales to rental car fleets - if I can read my notes correctly, I believe that since February 2007, they have not sold ONE minivan to a rental car fleet. They shows a video of the new Grand Caravan in action, and it’s pretty darned impressive. One thing I noticed in the spec sheet is that the 3.3L V6/4-speed auto is standard in the SE with no option to upgrade. Moving to the SXT gets you the 3.8L V6 with the SIX-speed automatic, with an optional upgrade to the new 4.0L V6.

For 2008, the base model of the PT Cruiser gets the “LX” designation. Otherwise it soldiers on unchanged for the most part.

Like the PT Cruiser, the 2008 Sebring Sedan base model gets the “LX” designation. Unlike the Avenger, the Sebring Sedan has the 2.4L World Engine/4-speed auto as the standard powertrain on ALL trim levels. Touring models can upgrade to the 2.7L V6/4-speed, and Limited models can upgrade to the 3.5L V6/6-speed (which I believe was the case with the 2007 models as well.)

The 300 doesn’t get the LX designation - the base 300 remains just that. 5-speed automatic remains available only with the 5.7L V8 on the 300C and with the 3.5L V6 on AWD models only.

Pacifica base becomes Pacifica LX, and the 4.0L/6-speed is available (apparently) on all trims - LX, Touring, and Limited.

The new Town & Country follows the Dodge Grand Caravan specs above. Base model is the LX, not to be confused with the SWB model from 2007.

On the new 2008 Dakota, the new 4.7L V8 will be available in SXT trim - at least for the fleet customers. Base powertrain is the 3.7L V6/6-speed manual. Four-speed automatics are options with either 3.7L V6 or 4.7L V8. The 4.7L V8 comes standard with the 5-speed automatic.

The 2008 Ram 1500 has a plethora of options too numerous to mention. Powertrains range from the 3.7L V6 with 6-speed manual or 4-speed auto, to the new 4.7L V8 with 6-speed manual or 5-speed auto, to the 5.7L V8 MDS with 5-speed auto, to the MegaCab 1500 with the non-MDS 5.7L V8 with the 5-speed auto.

The 2008 Ram 2500/3500 trucks can be had with the 5.7L non-MDS V8 and a 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic (except the 3500 Quad SWB or 3500 MegaCab), the Cummins 5.9L I6 with 6-speed manual or 4-speed automatic (fleets only), or the Cummins 6.7L I6 with 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic.

The Sprinter is very popular in the commercial fleet market - we were told that the 2007 model year run allotment is already sold out.

The Chrysler Aspen is apparently popular with higher-up managers and VPs in corporate fleets. Aspen gets the new 4.7L V8 or the 5.7L MDS V8, both backed by 5-speed automatics.
The Dodge Durango also gets the new 4.7L V8 as standard in 4×4 models, and in limited quantities it can be paired with the full-time NV244G2 4WD system. Base Durango 4×2 engine is the 3.7L V6 with 4-speed auto. The 5.7L MDS V8 is standard on the full-time 4WD models.

The Dodge Nitro - again, if I’m reading my notes right - offers the Load’N'Go floor on the SXT model for fleets - retail buyers need to step up to the SLT model to get it. The 4.0L V6 remains exclusive to the R/T model.

The Jeep Patriot is other model the fleet guys are really excited about. The 2.4L World Engine with 5-speed manual remains the standard powertrain, with the 2.0L World engine/CVT2 combo as an option (at retail, you get a $200 credit for going down to the 2.0L engine, but are forced to pay $1050 for the CVT2.) We were told there were a few fleets using Explorers and Trailblazers that were looking to downsize and looking closely at the Patriot.

The Compass is available with the same powertrains as the Patriot, minus the availability of FreedomDrive II. The Compass was largely ignored by most of the people in attendance here and was offered as the “substitute” when the Caliber and Patriot were out on test drives.

The big news for the Grand Cherokee was the new 3.0L CRD model, and they had one on hand. The CRD is only available in the Limited and Overland packages with the 5-speed automatic. Interesting is that they list the 4.7 and 5.7 V8s as being available with a “multispeed automatic.”

The Commander continues unchanged, but also gets that “multispeed automatic” with the V8s.

They talked up the new Liberty a bit - mostly to say it was bigger and has more room behind the rear seats. They never mentioned the SkySlider roof at all, not was there one available to test drive.

Jeep Wrangler was big news as far as sales - but not so much for the fleet buyers.

As it was a DaimlerChrysler event, there was a Mercedes fleet rep on hand to talk about Mercedes car and SUV offerings for fleets. Mercedes is very high on the new C-Class, and for fleet buyers, the entry-level C-Class will come in around $30K - they are looking to make a dent in the “VP/SVP” company car market with this one. Virtually all the Mercedes cars and SUVs are available to fleet buyers - ranging from $30K to $500K - including the AMG models. (We all thought it amusing when the rep - with a straight face - pronounced the word “coupe” as “coo-pay” - he did slip once, which leads me to believe that “coo-pay” is the official Mercedes pronunciation.) There was an E-Class, CLS550, and an R320 CDI on hand for test drives - once you signed a waiver.

If there was one thing that resulted from the “merger” - it appeared to be Mercedes new desire to get deeper involved in fleet sales. Overall, comments on the Cerberus buyout were positive - they are happy to still be working with Daimler on key projects, but also happy to be able to ‘do their own thing.’

And then - test drive time!

Jeep Patriot
I made a beeline straight for the Patriot, as I’ve wanted to drive one since they became available. This was a Limited model with the FD1 4×4 system on it. It wasn’t until the halfway point of my test drive that I remembered that this was the CVT2 I was driving - I had never driven a CVT-equipped vehicle until this time. That said a lot to me, as I didn’t experience the “oddness” that some folks have with CVT operation. I pushed the pedal and it went - no hesitation, no problems. Interior was very nice - the center armrest seemed to come up a bit short for my taste, but overall I had no complaints about the interior. Well, one. My right leg would find itself resting against the center console. While a repositioning of the seat may cure that in the long run, it didn’t cause any real problems overall. I really liked the Patriot.

Dodge Avenger
This was another vehicle I was wanting to try out. It was an SXT model, fairly well loaded, in black, with the spolier. It looked good. Had the heated/cooled cupholder - while I didn’t get to try it out - I can see where a guy who works out of his fleet car might find it handy. The seats had the Yes Essentials fabric on them and felt kind of hard initially - I felt like I was sitting ON them rather than IN them. By the end of the drive, it wasn’t an issue and they felt fine. Controls were all reachable. Accelleration was good, even with the “old” 41TES and the 2.7L V6. My only complaint was when I headed back - this was around 11am and the sun came into the large front windows and struck the chrome trim around the shifter - and then was directed right into my right eye. This would be a recurring theme on the rest of the test drives - each one with the trim around the shifter would put the glare right into my eyes. That was the only issue I had at the end of the drive. Well, that and I prefer the grey interior to the beige. COmpared to my current 98 Stratus, the Avenger has more “vertical” room, but it seemed like less “horizontal” room. And there’s a lot of distance from the outside to the seat and vice versa - almost like I had to take an extra large step to get in and out. Pant legs and skirts will get grimy on the lower part of the car in the Avenger (so it’s a good thing I wear my skirts short I guess.)

Dodge Nitro
Not sure why I decided to drive the Nitro - I’m not in the market for such a truck - it may have just been that it was available. The color was sharp - a very vibrant blue. All black interior - which made it very hot inside. I put it into reverse to back it up and…nothing. I’m used to a vehicle with an automatic starting to creep forward or backward when in gear and my foot is off the brake. Not the Nitro. I had to give it gas. Which leads to issue #2 - there’s a bit of pushing until the truck moves, and then at that point it MOVES. RIGHT NOW. I think I scared the people standing nearby - there was just not a smooth way to slowly back the truck up. Got it moving foward - no smooth way to get going forward either - and proceeded to brake. Problem #3 - there was about 1.5-2 inches of pedal travel (it seemed) before the brakes began to apply. So, with my training out of the way, I moved on with the test drive. There’s no big expanse of dash top between driver and glass like in the cars - which pretty much means no glare on the glass from the dash - that was nice. Center console was HUGE in width, as was the armrest. No good place to put my left elbow - sill was too high, armrest was too low. And make no mistake - the Nitro isn’t some cute-ute SUV with car-like ride - this thing is and rides like a truck. On the plus side, the fact that the windows aren’t very tall means they don’t take long to roll up or down.

At this point the event was winding down. I really wanted to drive the CLS550, but it proved to be popular. I wanted to drive the Sebring to compare it with the Avenger, but it was out as well. Then, something red caught my eye…

Dodge Charger SRT-8
I actually wanted to drive the 2.7L Charger they had, but it was out. So I figured - what the hell? - and grabbed the SRT-8’s keys. Comfortable seats, good dash and console layout, it was very nice. I was able to back it up and move out with little fanfare - I was trying to behave myself, after all. Moved towards the street and immediately hit the silly cruise control level that sits right above the turn signal stalk. I’d gladly give up the radio and info controls on the steering wheel for cruise control buttons, because that’s where God intended them to be. Plus too many stalks looks stupid. But I digress. The area we were in is suburban, heavy commercial and retail, and heavy traffic While were were asked/told not to get on the nearby tollway, I was aware of the frontage road. Little development there, and more importantly, little traffic. Left the light just fine, and then gravity took hold of my right foot. Quicker than I could say “sorry officer”, I was doing 90 with no fuss and no drama. And just as quickly, I was back down to 45. Now that I got those demons out of my system, I could focus on the rest of the car. Other than the “glare on the trim” issue as before, I had no complaints - this was just a damn nice car.

Time for only one more ride. Sebring is still out, as is the CLS550. So, to compare against the Patriot I drove earlier…

Dodge Caliber
Not sure if it was because this example was beat on more than others (it had 5000 miles on it), but the Caliber did not impress me. In fact, it didn’t compare to the Patriot at all in my mind. The textured dash reflected in the glass and was annoying, the lid for the SRS seemed to be a different shade than the rest of the dash, and that annoying “CVT-ness” was fully present and accounted for here. The 2.0L made more noise than I recall the 2.4L making in the Patriot. The power was fine overall, but I just did not get the same feeling overall with the Caliber that I did with the Patriot. It seemed a LOT cheaper (and likely was - Caliber SXT versus Patriot Limited 4×4) - but it did show me just how much two vehicles that were very similar under the skin could have a very different experience overall.

Both the Patriot and Avenger are on my ‘future vehicle’ list - I was impressed with both. My initial impression of the Avenger at the Chicago Auto Show wasn’t all that good - there were fit and finish issues - and it’s nice to see those have been addressed. The Patriot flat-out impressed me, and after looking at the pricing, it’s got to be one of the best bargains in the business today.

AutoExpress offered a few more tidbits on the Dodge Demon concept…

Set to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show next month, the Dodge Demon is a striking two-seater. While bosses are still calling it a concept, it’s closer to the showroom than you might think. Officials are remaining tight-lipped, but the cabrio is tipped to go into production next year.

As with the Chrysler Crossfire, the Demon uses underpinnings from the previous-generation Mercedes SLK - this is the key to the car’s affordable development costs, and should help to keep prices competitive. Featuring the latest Dodge face, the newcomer fits perfectly into the current line-up. At the front, its huge grille is flanked by headlamps inspired by those on the Viper, plus a low airdam.

EDIT: More rumours have the Demon based off the Mercedes A/B-Class. Hopefully come Geneva, we’ll get a definitive answer.

Read more after the jump…

The muscular look is continued in profile, with sharp lines and distinctive asymmetric wheelarches wrapped around 19-inch alloys. Meanwhile, the rear has a blunt appearance similar to Nissan’s 350Z Roadster.

Inside, occupants sit snugly behind the low windscreen, which gives the interior a sporty feel. There’s no room for back seats, although the boot is deep and offers decent practicality.

The dashboard boasts plenty of switchgear which will be familiar to Chrysler owners, and has a retro feel thanks to the aluminium-effect finish. However, the production version of the Demon is likely to have one feature that will trump its rivals.

While the show car doesn’t offer a roof at all, there is space set aside behind the cockpit to stow the top. But where the Crossfire Roadster has a fabric hood, the Demon will steal the limelight with a full folding metal roof. This will give the Dodge a key advantage over many rivals, too.

Where the Demon falls short of the competition is when you lift the bonnet. Although the Viper is equipped with a mighty V10 powerplant, its little brother has to make do with a four-cylinder unit sourced from the firm’s Ford Focus-rivalling Caliber. In standard tune, it delivers only 170bhp to the rear wheels. However, it’s also likely that the Demon will be available with a turbocharged engine offering a choice of 233bhp and 270bhp.

The show car is fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox which has a similar snappy, short-throw feel to the Mazda MX-5’s set-up. This allows the 1,200kg roadster to cover 0-62mph with impressive speed.

Only when the model is ready for the showroom will the exact acceleration figures be recorded, but the Dodge is expected to bridge the performance gap between the MX-5 and 350Z. Prices have yet to be decided, too, although the Demon is likely to weigh in at around £20,000.

Plenty of engineering work needs to be done to bring the SLK’s ageing underpinnings up to the standard of cutting-edge rivals. But be in no doubt - this is one Dodge that would strike at the heart of the drop-top market.

Ontario to Become Home of the All-new 2008 Dodge Challenger

    * Brampton, Ontario plant will begin production in the spring of 2008
* Plant will become Chrysler Group’s first to build four different models
* DaimlerChrysler’s commitment to Canada continues
* Countdown begins for highly anticipated sports coupe

Toronto, Feb 13, 2007 - DaimlerChrysler announced today that the all-new 2008 Dodge Challenger will be built at its Brampton Assembly Plant near Toronto.

“It’s good news that the Dodge Challenger will be added to the Canadian production line-up,” said Reid Bigland, President and CEO – DaimlerChrysler Canada. “Quickly bringing desirable new products such as the Dodge Challenger to market is critical to keeping our plants humming and our dealerships busy.”

Read more after the jump…

The Brampton plant also produces Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger and Dodge Magnum and works on three shifts. The Windsor (Ontario) Assembly Plant also works on three shifts and produces Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country minivans, as well as Chrysler Pacifica. Production of the Dodge Challenger will begin next year and preparations to ready the plant are already underway.

The decision to locate this important product in Ontario was partially the result of the Ontario government’s strong support for the Brampton Assembly Plant through its contribution to the plant-wide third shift training program, which was essential to the successful launch of the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger and Dodge Magnum, and now the successful launch of the Dodge Challenger.

“Brampton is our first plant to demonstrate the ability to build four models on one line,” said Frank Ewasyshyn, Executive Vice President – Manufacturing, Chrysler Group. “As we continue to expand our new model lineup and further implement our flexible manufacturing strategy, other facilities will also have this capability.”

Lean manufacturing and product development strategies also allow the Chrysler Group to bring new models, like the Dodge Challenger, to market more quickly. First revealed as a concept vehicle at the North American International (Detroit) Auto Show in 2006, it was announced this past summer that the 2008 Dodge Challenger would be going into production in 2008.

Riding a wave of fan anticipation, a new clock will be on display along with the Dodge Challenger concept car to count down to the unveiling of the production version of the car at the Chicago Auto Show next year. Today, the count-down clock shows 358 days.

“Our speed to market means that Challenger production is now measured in only days,” said George Murphy, Senior Vice President – Global Marketing, Chrysler Group. “The ability to quickly react to ever-changing consumer tastes is a competitive advantage for the company.”

It will be just a little over two years from Dodge Challenger’s concept car introduction to the time it will be available in dealerships.

The company has already seen passionate response to the Dodge Challenger with its bold, powerful and capable attributes. Challenger content received a total of 1.5 million visits on the Dodge.com Web site in 2006 and 20,000 potential customers have asked the company for more product information regarding the car.

The production version of the 2008 Dodge Challenger will be true to both its historical and modern concept car roots as a two-door, HEMI® V-8-powered, rear-drive vehicle. It will be the first coupe built on Chrysler Group’s highly successful large car platform, which includes the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger and Dodge Magnum.

All-New High Performance V-6 Diesel Engine
The 2007 Dodge Sprinter is powered by an all-new high-performance 3.0-liter V-6 turbo diesel engine boasting 154 horsepower (115 kW) and maximum torque of 280 lb.-ft. (380 Nm) at 1,200 to 2,400 rpm. With an aluminum crankcase, a balancer shaft and two overhead camshafts per cylinder bank, the smooth-running engine has a low emissions rating and comes equipped with a standard particulate filter. This is the first time a diesel particulate filter has been fitted as standard in the Sprinter’s weight class. The aluminum crankcase contributes to the engine’s light weight of 643 lbs. (240 kg).

All-New V-6 Gas Engine
The all-new 2007 Dodge Sprinter is also offered with an available 3.5-liter V-6 high-performance gas engine. Distributing a maximum output of 254 horsepower (189 kW) at 5,900 rpm and maximum torque of 250 lb.-ft. (339 Nm) at 2,500-5,000 rpm, this all-new engine delivers impressive power and a refined, smooth-running driving experience. The new gas engine is responsive, boasts low emissions and features a maintenance-friendly design.

Five-Speed Automatic Transmission for Maximum Smoothness
All 2007 Dodge Sprinter models are equipped with a standard five-speed automatic transmission. The five-speed automatic offers effortless shifting and maximum smoothness, well-spaced ratios, long service life and high fuel economy.

Similar to the previous model, the driver is able to change gears with an instrument panel-mounted gearshift conveniently located on the center console. The shift commands are transmitted via Bowden cables allowing the shift effort to be further reduced. If desired, the driver may limit the shift range manually by nudging the selector lever to the right or left (plus/minus). In complement to engine braking, this feature is particularly useful on inclines, slopes or downhill gradients.

Superior fuel economy along with oil change intervals of 10,000 miles contribute to the all-new 2007 Dodge Sprinter’s low maintenance costs.

Engineering the All-New 2007 Dodge Sprinter
* Expanded reliability, capability and durability with all-new commercial-grade chassis
* Enhanced suspension for improved ride and handling
* New tires and 16-inch wheels standard on all models
* New height- and tilt- adjustable steering wheel
* Standard tire pressure monitoring system (2500 models)

A consistent showcase of engineering excellence, Sprinter models have earned a reputation for innovation, superior performance and manufacturing superiority. The all-new Sprinter’s unibody design delivers a light curb weight and outstanding payload. With enhanced passenger compartment strength, significant ride and comfort improvements have been achieved by redeveloping all suspension bearings to provide maximum vibration isolation. Front torsional stiffness is increased 20 percent and 100 percent at the rear, and fewer welds in the front end reduce the vehicle weight. New 16-inch wheels accommodate large-diameter brake discs and provide the foundation for improved brake system performance, while a variable speed-sensitive steering ratio allows for easy maneuvering.

The all-new 2007 Dodge Sprinter features an independent shock absorber strut front suspension with wishbones. On all models, transverse leaf springs are manufactured from fibreglass-reinforced plastic, rendering them substantially lighter than conventional steel leaf springs. This also provides greater stabilizing power. A new type of spring mounting, using mainly center bearings, is used to decouple suspension and axle-locating components, significantly improving tuning possibilities.

The steering gear and transmission cross-member are also mounted on the sub-frame. In the event of an impact, controlled energy absorption is provided by side members and by the sub-frame, which detaches itself. An all-new front axle provides improved handling and higher payload capacity than the previous model with ratings between 3,970 and 4,080 lbs. Depending on model, the rear axle is also equipped with a stabilizer and new progressive-rate parabolic multi-leaf springs, optimized for easy installation.

All models of the all-new 2007 Dodge Sprinter are equipped with standard 16-inch wheels. Standard fitted 215/85 R16 tires on the 3500 models and 245/75 R16 tires on the 2500 models allow for a higher load rating while delivering improved traction and handling on dry roads. All tires are secured with six mounting bolts as opposed to five on the previous model. Aluminum wheels and all-season tires are an option.

The all-new Dodge Sprinter features a highly-advanced improved braking system. New 16-inch wheels allow large-diameter brake discs to be fitted, resulting in an increased braking surface area, simplified cooling air supply and improved allocation of braking heat. Fixed-caliper disc brakes are used on all wheels ensuring excellent anti-fade characteristics and stable braking performance. Front and rear brake discs are ventilated on all models.

The all-new 2007 Dodge Sprinter is equipped with standard rack-and-pinion power steering with a new height- and tilt- adjustable steering wheel. The speed-sensitive variable-ratio steering is responsive to small movements of the steering wheel providing enhanced operator control for easier maneuvering and parking. The Dodge Sprinter has an excellent curb-to-curb turning diameter of 45.2 feet.

Factory fitting of a trailer coupling eliminates the need for additional technical inspections and alterations. Depending on model, maximum towing capacity is up to 7,500 lbs.

Sprinter’s rear-wheel-drive capability provides improved reliability, handling and traction (particularly when the vehicle is loaded). Requiring fewer fuel stops than competitive vehicles, its 25-gallon fuel tank and low fuel consumption ensure an extended driving range. As before, the filler neck is located in the lower part of the B-pillar and is only accessible when the driver’s door is unlocked, preventing unauthorized use.

Unprecedented Versatility at the Core of the All-New 2007 Dodge Sprinter
Seriously supersized, it also boasts unmatched upfit-friendliness and offers three interior roof height options: standard (65 inches), high (76 inches) and an all-new mega-roof (84 inches) ・the most among full-size vans — resulting in enhanced benefits in handling and performance, and balanced weight distribution across all variants.

All-new sliding cargo doors and rear doors have been developed for numerous versions of the 2007 Dodge Sprinter. In addition to best-in-class cargo capacity (up to 600 cubic feet), Dodge Sprinter also boasts the widest rear door opening (270 degrees). Considerably larger than on the previous model, Sprinter’s new pallet-friendly cargo sliding door offers a best-in-class loading width of 51 inches. Standard for all models on the passenger side, a sliding cargo door is also available as an option for the driver’s side. On high-roof and mega versions, the load-in height increases from 60 inches to 72 inches. Rear doors come in two versions: one for vehicles with a standard roof (loading height 60 inches) and one for high-roof and mega-roof (72 inches).

Introducing the All-New Mega-Roof
The 2007 Dodge Sprinter takes versatility to an all-new high with the new mega-roof option. Providing enormous cargo volume (600 cu. ft.) and increased best-in-class interior size (84 inches), up to 7-feet interior height allows customers to work inside the vehicle in comfort. Unlike standard and high-roof models which are made of sheet-steel, the new mega-roof is made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic and may be painted in any body color. Available with either fixed or opening skylights of single-layer safety glass, an optional transparent plastic skylight is also available.

With a model line-up of cargo vans, passenger vans and chassis cabs, the all-new 2007 Dodge Sprinter offers a work vehicle that meets virtually any commercial van need. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) configurations of 8,550 lbs. and 9,990 lbs. are offered as well as a new higher maximum GVWR of 11,030 lbs. for cargo vans and chassis cabs.

The All-New 2007 Dodge Sprinter Chassis Cab
Designed with the body builder in mind, the all-new 2007 Dodge Sprinter Chassis Cab is a smart work-truck alternative that enables easy body installation and upfit. Its versatility begins with its flat frame rails, which provide a good mounting surface. Body builder and upfit specialists also will appreciate stand-out features including the bolted rear-cross frame member, and fuel-filler neck and nozzle integrated with the cab, which eliminates the need for re-routing or to build bodies around the fuel-fill system. Taillight wiring harnesses may be lengthened easily to fit extended utility bodies, or taillights may be deleted if required. Other options include a two-seat front bench and a rear window for the cab, and wiring harnesses for lighting the interior of upfit bodies. Offered in the same wheelbase versions as cargo and passenger vans, the Sprinter chassis cab is yet one more example of the segment’s most versatile work vehicle.

More than a Dozen New Features Added to All-New 2007 Dodge Sprinter
* New standard features include power windows and locks, halogen headlamps, 16-inch wheels, tilt- and height-adjustable steering wheel, CD radio and an all-new innovative storage concept
* New pallet-friendly cargo-sliding side door with best-in-class loading width (51 inches)
* New high-density headlamps with cornering light function sets new standard in lighting technology
* New integrated wide-angle mirrors with turn signals for excellent rear visibility

The next-generation Sprinter not only comes to market with numerous design, quality and technological enhancements, but is also loaded with a number of advanced comfort, convenience and safety features. Key highlights include:

Pallet-friendly cargo-sliding side door — With a best-in-class loading width of 51 inches, Dodge Sprinter’s new pallet-friendly cargo sliding door makes for easy loading and unloading, while new track rollers allow doors to slide smoothly and quietly. A special retainer, released mechanically when operating the door handle, prevents unintentional closing. On high-roof models, the sliding door has a second lock at the top of the door. The sliding door and rear doors may be locked and unlocked independently of cab doors for additional security.

High-density bi-xenon headlamps — Representing the latest in lighting technology and safety for vans, these new optional headlamps offer excellent low- and high-beam performance. Their high-precision projection-beam technology with a glass lens and a solenoid-controlled shutter provide exceptionally wide, bright road illumination. These high-density headlamps are equipped with automatic range adjustment and a headlamp cleaning system.

Add-Light system with cornering light function — Providing extra lighting on winding roads and when turning or maneuvering, the Add-Light system uses an H-7 halogen bulb that comes on automatically at approximately 45 miles per hour (mph). At speeds up to 25 mph, the light is also activated as a cornering light when the direction indicator is operated. So that lighting changes are not sudden, the light dims or illuminates gradually.

Integrated wide-angle mirrors with one-touch triple-flash turn signals ・Larger, exterior mirrors give the driver greater rear visibility. Power and heated versions are an available option. Manually adjustable, standard spherical wide-angle auxiliary mirrors are integrated to reduce blind spots. Available side-indicator repeaters integrated into mirror housings are new in this class. For wide-bodied vehicles, extended mirror arms are available in short and long versions.

Rain/light sensor — The optional rain/light sensor adds a continuous variable wiping mode controlled by the intensity of the rain. The sensor measures overall ambient light and light in front of the vehicle and promptly adjusts for different conditions including daylight, dusk, night or driving through tunnels or under bridges. A front windshield heater consisting of thin, wavy, horizontal heating filaments is also available as an option.

Rear-window heating and wash/wipe system — All glazed versions of the rear doors may be equipped with a new rear-window heating and wash/wipe system. For added visibility and safety, a heating filament along the wipers’ end-sweep position prevents wiper blades from freezing to the window in winter conditions. If the driver engages reverse gear when the front windshield wiper is on, rear wipers are automatically activated as well.

Innovative storage concept and air conditioned glove compartment — Innovative storage concept with space for beverages, food, glasses, maps, work papers and more. The new glove compartment is larger and more easily accessible than on the previous model, incorporates two card holders and a pen holder, and, using the air conditioning system, may be kept cool. With the optional bulkhead and mega-roof, there is an available over-cab storage area in the load compartment, ideal for accommodating larger items including bags, tool cases, helmets, rainwear, etc. There is also additional overhead storage above the windshield which is standard.

Seats with quick-release latches ・Passenger van seats are equipped with quick-release latches allowing them to be removed from the vehicle quickly and without tools. Of special interest for the parcel delivery sector is the optional flip-up seat on the front-passenger side, available in conjunction with the bulkhead. The optional bulkhead with a sliding door provides quick access to the cargo compartment. There is also an available two-seat bench with a fold out work surface and under seat storage.

Center console ・Completely redesigned, center console features controls for the entertainment and navigation center, air conditioning and heating systems, hazard warning light switch, a note holder, a 12-volt socket and two cup holders.

Audio entertainment systems — In addition to a standard AM/FM CD radio, upgraded options include a six-disc CD changer and hands-free telephone systems which may be controlled by the multi-functional steering wheel.

Air conditioning systems — A range of air conditioning systems are available. The Tempmatic front air conditioning system adequately provides air conditioning for the driver and co-driver and for the first passenger seat row. Air conditioning is also provided for the glove compartment via a separate air duct and slide control. To increase the cooling performance for passenger vans, a roof-mounted air conditioning unit is available.

Heating system — Now an air-blending system instead of the previous coolant-controlled system, the new standard heating system responds quickly and the temperature may be precisely controlled. Air ducts and outlets have also been revised for uniform ventilation.

Electric heater booster ・Benefiting from efficiency improvements to Sprinter’s diesel engine, some models are equipped with a standard electric heater booster. It is activated automatically after starting the engine which substantially increases the heater output temperature. When reaching a pre-set outside temperature or interior temperature of 80 degrees, the heater booster switches off automatically.

Exterior ・Bold, Powerful Design Conveys Instant Recognition
Unmistakably a Dodge, clear design themes found in the all-new 2007 Dodge Sprinter begin with the distinctive contours that start at the grille aperture, encompass the iconic Ram-head badge and run the perimeter of the vehicle. On each side, new integrated wide-angle mirrors provide excellent rear visibility. Serving a convenient and practical function, recessed steps in the front bumper make it easy to access and clean the large windshield.

A continuous sidewall line rises and widens from front to rear, giving the vehicle a sensation of forward movement. The side design is also dominated by large rub strips which run from the front and rear bumpers. The rain channel has been discreetly integrated into the roof area and the wide side rub panels reinforce a sense of harmony and visual unity. These lines are fluently integrated into the curvature of the sidewalls creating a natural transition between front and rear bumpers.

From the rear view, the 2007 Dodge Sprinter makes a clear break from conventional van design. Stylish rear lights blend in with lines of the vehicle. A raised third brakelight is standard on passenger vans and optional for cargo vans. Chassis cab versions have eight-chamber rear lights incorporating side marker, clearance lighting and the license plate light. Lower parts of the sidewalls, bumpers and rear doors have a pronounced taper without sacrificing load space. The striking Ram-head badge is also boldly positioned at the rear, located between the rear doors.

Like most work vehicles, commercial vans are on the road at all times day or night and in all types of weather, so better-than-good visibility was a prevailing design and safety consideration. Distinctive, newly developed clear-lens halogen H-7 headlamps provide improved night vision due to their long range and wide roadside illumination.

Twenty exterior paint colors ・the most in the segment — form a diverse offering including new colors Velvet Red, Hibiscus Red, Aqua Green, and Anemone Blue.

Interior Cab Showcases Convenience and Spacious, User-friendly Cockpit
The all-new 2007 Dodge Sprinter offers convenience, safety and security in a workspace that has been optimized to provide enhanced comfort, ergonomics and functionality. The interior of the new Sprinter features a comfortable cockpit with materials that have a high-quality look and feel. Controls are clearly laid out, may be accessed easily, and are organized in logical groups around the driver, in the doors and center console. A redesigned steering wheel is standard with telescoping height and tilt adjustment, as well as optional multi-function controls enabling use of telephone and entertainment system controls.

For even more convenient entry and exit, the height of the door opening has been increased by nearly five inches. A slight reduction in the maximum opening angle of the door, from 73 to 64 degrees, has ergonomic benefits since the handle of the opened door is easier to reach from the seat. This also reduces the risk of damage when opening the door in narrow parking spaces.

Various seat versions are available, up to and including a suspension seat. For cargo vans and chassis cabs, the base of the optional double co-driver seat is designed as a storage compartment, which may be accessed by folding the seat cushion forward. A folding segment in the backrest of the center seat may be folded down and used as a work table or breakfast table. A convenient work station, the tabletop incorporates two cup holders and a pen holder.

The 2007 Dodge Sprinter’s all-new instrument cluster is available in two versions. The standard version provides basic information such as mileage, time, outside temperature, tire pressure monitoring system (2500 models), gear selection and other information shown in a clearly organized display. An enhanced instrument cluster comes with an optional multi-function steering wheel and includes, among other things, an analog fuel gauge, chromed-ringed dials and a digital speedometer.

CAR & DRIVER says:

The Demon is a concept from a company that once made a habit of producing well-received concepts, but Dodge has no vehicle architecture suitable for such a car, so we expect it to remain just a concept. Instead of presaging a production car, the Demon exists only to raise Dodge’s cachet in Europe, where it is scarcely known.

I wouldn’t be too sure about that myself…

There will be those that will cry that the Razor was designed to be produced for around $15K. Folks, that was for a stripper coupe with no amenities. If the Demon is produced, it ain’t gonna be $15K. Picture a more Solstice/Sky-ish $20K. I’m not so sure the Demon name will stick either, what with folks getting all uptight about such things in today’s world.

It gets me wondering just what ELSE could come from such a platform though…remember - FLEX is where it’s at!

PRESS RELEASE:

Dodge Demon Roadster Concept –
Simple Soul, Artful Attitude Make for Radical Results

Geneva – The Dodge Demon concept is a compact, nimble “roadster with an attitude,” a perfect balance of classic sports car proportion and simplicity blended with modern design and performance.

“While the iconic Dodge Viper is a dream car for many, the Dodge Demon is designed to be an attainable dream car,” said Jae Chung – Dodge Demon Principal Exterior Designer, Chrysler Group. “The exterior design is simple yet bold, featuring an energetic combination of curves and intersecting planes.”

The bodyside of the Dodge Demon main character line flows up and over the front wheel, then drops diagonally to an angular color-keyed vent on the rear fender that directs cooling air to the rear brakes. In similar fashion, the compound rear fender surface curves up and over the rear wheel, sweeping into a broad diagonal plane extending to the taillamp. The resulting muscular fender form projects boldly beyond the main body, underscoring that the Dodge Demon concept is a rear-wheel-drive machine.

The rear surface of the body is divided into three planes with two chamfered outboard planes, dominated by long, tapering trapezoidal taillamps. The taillamps sport translucent red inset lenses that surround LED back-up lamps.

Up front, the signature Dodge crosshair grille is stuffed into an aggressive, menacing, trapezoidal opening that thrusts boldly forward.

Set into elongated angled triangles, the projector headlamps, delineated by bright rings, are set into black chrome bezels, giving the front end mean-looking “eyes” that accentuate the grille opening. Encompassing the upper portions of the front fenders and sporting two recessed air outlets, the Dodge Demon’s hood is hinged at the front, adding a just-for-fun performance-car look and feel.

Featuring an open-spoke design, the wheels are pushed to the corners of the body for a dramatic stance and capable performance. The 19-inch brushed aluminum wheels are set into assertive, asymmetrical openings that reprise the body’s playful combination of curves and planes.

The beltline kicks up at the rear and into the higher deck lid contour, giving the lucky occupants an encapsulated, protective feeling.

“In the manner of timeless British sports cars, the interior of the Dodge Demon is purposely functional, not frivolous,” said Dan Zimmermann – Dodge Demon Principal Interior Designer. “Everything relating to the driving experience is emphasized, while that which is not is made visually secondary.

“The well laid out instrument panel, for example, is familiar, yet modern. Everything you really need – the gauges, circular AC outlets, radio – is encapsulated in a cross-car brushed aluminum bezel that also accentuates the width of the cabin. Secondary controls and features, such as the HVAC knobs and the passenger-side glove box, are located below this bezel,” Zimmerman added.

In a similar functional manner, the floor console is deliberately not a part of, or attached to, the instrument panel. The console is dominated by the squat ready-at-hand silver and black manual shift knob, and its leather boot is set into a bright trim ring. The wide, brushed aluminum console bezel also incorporates the recessed emergency brake handle, with the window switch gear, softly lit cup holders and 12V power outlet organized into a graphically unified shape. The upper portion of the instrument panel, including the cluster brow, is accented by a stitched seam with contrasting silver thread.

“Each of these features is set flush, or nearly flush, with the bezel surface so as to establish a ‘clear zone’ for the driver’s shift arm in all seating positions, with nothing in the way of the driving experience,” Zimmerman said.

The raised plateau at the rear of the console incorporates a covered storage bin – with a lid that serves as an armrest between shifts – while the portion of the console extending under the instrument panel has an open bin handy for incidentals.

The steering wheel employs an aluminum open-spoke design with each of the three spokes intersecting the small circular hub for a timeless sports car look. The wheel rim itself is brushed aluminum on the inside, complemented with stitched vinyl on the outer rim. Immediately forward of the wheel, the four-gauge cluster features classic white-on-black dials with graphics inspired by sports watches. Each circular gauge is set handsomely inside a finely detailed silver and chrome bezel ring, while gauge pointers are colored to match the exterior.

The doors feature durable, vertical grab handles, each anchored to a silver bezel housing the chrome door remote handle. The lower portion of each door features a stylish brushed aluminum bezel that encapsulates the large circular speaker grille and then drops sharply as it moves rearward to form the map pocket outer panel, mimicking a feature line on the car’s exterior.

The Dodge Demon’s seats feature contoured bolsters that are just high enough to provide support when cornering, yet do not hinder ingress or egress. Set in exposed low-gloss carbon fiber shells, the black seats with integral head restraints feature inserts of textured “Momentum” fabric mated to fabric bolsters, with specific sew lines accented by silver thread. Individual brushed aluminum and carbon fiber roll bars are positioned directly behind the bucket seats. With long seat tracks, there is ample storage behind the seats. Additional covered storage is provided in the bulkhead between the seats.

The Dodge Demon concept is an affordable Dodge sports car which merges brand cues of bold design and powerful performance with an open-air “fun-to-drive” attitude.

Bigger Commercial Presence Extends Dodge Truck Leadership
Expanding the Dodge Ram portfolio while building on Dodge’s leadership position in the truck market, the all-new 2008 Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs conquer new territory as they charge into the Class 4 and 5 chassis cab segments creating a greater commercial presence for the Dodge brand.
“The commercial vehicle market is essentially white space for the Dodge brand,” said Murphy. “We will continue to fill it with bold, powerful and capable vehicles.”
The Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs will compete within the Class 4 and 5 segments with a gross vehicle weight range of 14,000 to 19,500 lbs. Overall industry forecasts for this range of chassis cab vehicles were 140,000 units in 2006 with growth expectations to 156,000 units by 2012. The Class 4-5 chassis cab segment is expecting further growth to 18 percent by 2015.

U.S. sales of Class 3-5 trucks grew 42 percent in 2005 to 261,627. Class 3-5 vehicles have a gross vehicle weight range between 10,001 lbs. to 19,500 lbs.

Targeted at small-business tradesmen, fleet customers and traditional chassis cab users, the Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs expand on a solid commercial foundation and lineup of full-size van, minivan and body-on-frame commercial vehicles joining the Dodge Ram 3500 Chassis Cab, Dodge Sprinter, Dodge Ram pickup, and Dodge Caravan and Grand Caravan cargo vans in the Dodge commercial vehicle lineup.

Powertrain Options Ensure Powerhouse Performance
Dominant commercial performance is assured with the 2008 Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs as commercial customer specialty needs are met with superior capability, durability and performance.
“Delivering premium commercial performance, capability and durability, the all-new 2008 Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs offer the segment’s most potent powertrain combinations in work trucks that get the job done,” said Mike Donoughe, Vice President — Body-on-frame Product Team.
Maintaining its reign at the top of the heavy-duty diesel pickup segment, the standard Cummins engine generates 305 horsepower at 3,000 rpm and 610 lb.-ft. of torque at 1,600 rpm. The legendary engine also delivers superior fuel economy while ensuring durability and low cost of ownership for the commercial customer.
Providing superior trailer towing, acceleration, throttle response and drivability, the 6.7-liter engine is not only more powerful, it’s also cleaner with B5 biodiesel compatibility and a reduction in particulates and nitrogen oxide (NOx) that comply with the 50-state 2007 heavy-duty emission standards. As durable as it is powerful, the Cummins 6.7-liter turbo-diesel engine also has life-to-major overhaul intervals of 350,000 miles.
Completing the dynamic powertrain package, the all-new 2008 Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs offer a six-speed automatic transmission with Power Take Off (PTO) capability or a six-speed manual transmission with PTO capability. An available electronic-shift transfer case is offered and a factory-installed exhaust brake contributes to both safety and superior brake life.

“Job Rated” Commercial-grade Chassis with Superior Suspension System
The Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs lineup of 4×2, 4×4, dual-rear-wheel, regular and Quad Cab models are “Job-rated,” meaning they are designed, engineered, tested and built to meet the rigid standards of commercial truck buyers.
Armed with Dodge Ram Heavy Duty’s superior suspension system, beefed up even more for commercial applications, Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs provide expanded capability and durability with a commercial-grade chassis mated to a one-piece C-channel rear-frame rail (50,000 psi steel).
Two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive models feature a recirculating ball system that provides precise response and an on-center steering feel through lower internal friction. Improved power steering lines contribute to the delivery of precise feel and response for better handling. Featuring solid-beam front and rear axles, and a five-link, coil-spring front suspension with beam axle, a front and rear link-type sway bar and heavy-duty tubular shock absorbers are standard.
The rear suspension on two- and four-wheel-drive models is equipped with leaf springs and includes standard two-stage springs as part of the spring design for greater load-carrying capability.
Four cab-axle lengths (60, 84, 108 and 120 inches) are available. Maximum Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) for 4500 models is 16,500. For 5500 models, the maximum GVWR is 19,500 lbs. The Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) for both 4500 and 5500 models is 26,000 lbs.
The standard diesel exhaust brake system, together with class-leading brakes and pistons, provides extended brake life and increased driver control while contributing to enhanced safety performance. Standard four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock braking system (ABS) ensure superior safety and crash-avoidance capability.

Unmatched Versatility and Upfit-Friendliness
Meeting all cab-axle and industry upfitter specifications, the 2008 Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs bring unmatched versatility and upfit-friendliness with an enhanced commercial-grade, user-friendly chassis to the Class 4 and 5 chassis segments. Flat, “clean” frame rails with industry-standard 34-inch frame rail spacing provide versatility for virtually any upfit application. All chassis components are below the frame surface to facilitate after-market upfits or retrofits.
Bolt-on and riveted-on exhaust hanger brackets provide increased upfitter flexibility, and riveted cross-members behind the cab allow for easier modification. The one-piece C-channel frame, shear plate or u-bolt access along the length of the frame, and shear plate mounting locations identified along the frame contribute to the Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs’ upfitter friendliness.
The fuel filler is routed through the frame and an optional mid-ship fuel tank frees up more space behind the rear axle for special upfit applications. Fuel and brake lines are routed together on the frame’s left side to make better use of space along the frame, which also has clearance for rear-exhaust routing.
Electrical connections are user-friendly thanks to three-fused battery feeds routed into the cab and on to the rear of the chassis. A high-current 50-amp ground stud is located at the rear of the frame. Upfitter wire circuits and electrical schematics are identified in the body builder guide.
Together, these unique upfit-friendly enhancements provide a streamline assembly process that reduces costs for upfitters, second-stage manufacturers and customers.

Bold, Tough, Dodge Design
Conveying commercial power and vigor, along with instantly recognizable, unmistakable bold Ram styling and design, the all-new 2008 Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs stand out in the Class 4-5 chassis cab segments.
Robust and loaded with a “big-truck” look and feel, its enormous crosshair grille and large headlamps are the dominant focal point of a vehicle that retains the most recognizable design signature of any mid-size truck on the market.
Reinforced by an equally bold hood and fender combination, the dynamic front appearance is anchored by twin, large 7- x 10-inch trailer tow mirrors as standard. Beneath each fender are 19.5-inch wheels. The Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs are available in three trim lines: ST, SLT and Laramie.

Comfortable and Convenient Interiors
The 2008 Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs successfully blend full-size interior comfort with commercial convenience. Showcasing an easy-to-navigate instrument panel cluster, the user-friendly wide center stack contains air conditioning, heating, ventilation and audio system controls. Comfortable, oversized seats, including available bucket seats with leather trim, provide relaxing support while adding both a rich appearance and upscale atmosphere to a commercial truck.
Quad Cab models provide seating for six passengers and are equipped with four standard doors and 60/40 folding rear seats. Demonstrating interior functionality and capability, seat cushions fold up to create a tall storage area from floor to ceiling. An optional floor section under the back seat folds open to form a flat-load floor with additional storage in each of the foot wells.
Delivering just as much versatility and flexibility, regular cab models provide generous storage behind the rear seat and allow for considerable travel use and ease in reclining for both driver and passengers.

More Than 1.5 Million Test Miles Logged by Dodge Truck Engineers
Commercial customers expect to put their trucks to work and get exceptional performance, capability and durability. In placing an extraordinary emphasis on quality, heavy-duty results were achieved as the all-new 2008 Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs take full advantage of modern technology and deliver quality by the ton with more than 1.5 million customer-equivalent miles logged by Dodge Truck engineers during the vehicle’s development.

All-new 2008 Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs Safety and Security Features
The all-new 2008 Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs provide commercial vehicle customers the highest level of safety and security technology available in the Class 4 and 5 chassis cab segments. Fourteen advanced safety technologies and enhanced accident-avoidance features are offered.
Following is a list of safety and security features found in the all-new 2008 Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs:
•	BeltAlert – Enhanced seat belt reminder system. If a vehicle is driven without the driver being properly belted, the system will periodically activate a chime and illuminate an icon in the instrument cluster to remind the driver to buckle up
•	Child-Protection Rear-door Locks – Allow customers to disable the rear-door, inside-release handle. A small lever on the door-shut face operates this feature
•	Constant Force Retractors (CFR) – Front outboard seat belts include a mechanical device designed to distribute the force of a seat belt according to the load of force exerted on it. CFRs are engineered to force-limit the belt system, and gradually release seat belt webbing in a controlled manner during an impact
•	Energy-absorbing Steering Column – Steering column utilizes two coaxial tubes that move relative to each other in order to allow the column to move forward for enhanced energy-absorption during an impact
•	Enhanced Accident Response System (EARS) – In the event of an impact, this system makes it easier for emergency personnel to see and reach occupants by turning on the interior lighting and unlocking doors after air bag deployment
•	Four-wheel Anti-lock-brake System (ABS) – Senses and prevents wheel lockup, offering improved steering control under extreme braking and/or slippery conditions
•	Integrated Remote Keyless Entry Transmitter and Ignition Key – The remote keyless entry locks and unlocks doors and turns on interior lamps. If the vehicle is equipped with a vehicle-theft security alarm, the remote also arms and disarms that system
•	Knee Bolsters – The steering column lower instrument panel and the glove-box door are reinforced to further protect occupants during frontal impacts. They both restrain and position the occupant properly and enable air bags to work effectively
•	Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH) – This system helps ease the installation of compatible aftermarket child seats
•	Multi-stage Air Bag System – Offering enhanced protection, this system is designed to deploy based on the severity of an impact
•	Seat Belt Pretensioners – During a collision, impact sensors initiate front outboard seat belt pretensioners to immediately remove slack from seat belts, thereby reducing the forward movement of the occupant’s head and torso
•	Security Alarm – Arms and disarms alarm feature through remote control, flashes lights and sounds horn upon unauthorized entry
•	Sentry Key Engine Immobilizer Theft Deterrent System – This utilizes an engine key that has an embedded transponder with a pre-programmed security key code. When the key is inserted into the ignition, the controller sends a random number to the transponder and the engine is allowed to start. If the correct key is not used, the engine will shut off after only a few seconds
•	Three-point Seat Belts – Front outboard seating positions and all rear seating positions in the Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs have lap and shoulder belts

Balanced Production Thanks to Flexible Manufacturing Process
The all-new 2008 Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs will be built at Chrysler Group’s Saltillo Assembly Plant in Coahuila, Mexico. One of the company’s most flexible plants, the Saltillo Plant — which also produces the all-new Dodge Ram 3500 Chassis Cab, Dodge Ram Mega Cab, Dodge Ram Power Wagon, and Dodge Ram Heavy Duty 2500 and 3500 models — takes on production of the Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs as part of the company’s Flexible Manufacturing Strategy (FMS).
The FMS approach allows the company to not only balance production with demand, but to also efficiently build low-volume vehicles that take advantage of market niches, and to quickly shift production volumes between different models within a single plant or among multiple plants.
“FMS is a key enabler in our ability to bring the all-new 2008 Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs to market,” said Frank Ewasyshyn, Executive Vice President – Manufacturing. “It not only allows us to produce a high-quality product, but to do so faster and at a lower cost.”
For production of the Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs, Chrysler Group recently invested an additional $48 million into the plant, which follows a $210 million investment in 2005 for production of the all-new 2006 Dodge Ram Mega Cab. Enlarging the facility by 120,000 square feet enables the plant to produce commercial vehicles and accommodate new frame configurations. In addition, the expansion increases production capacity and enables the plant to manage the added complexity of the Dodge Ram 4500/5500’s all-new commercial-grade chassis and suspensions, including two cab-axle lengths, regular and Quad Cab versions, 4×2 and 4×4 variants, and single- and dual-rear-wheel models.
The Saltillo Assembly Plant has 2,100 employees working on two shifts and is one of five Chrysler Group production facilities in Mexico.

2008 Dodge Dakota Image Gallery

Chicago – Feb. 7, 2006 – Chrysler Group today unveiled the new 2008 Dodge Dakota mid-size truck with a new engine that not only offers 25 percent more horsepower and 10 percent more torque, but also better fuel economy and increased refinement. The 2008 Dodge Dakota also features new exterior and interior styling, and many best-in-class capabilities. The new truck arrives in dealerships in August.

New for 2008 are striking exterior and interior enhancements that bear signature Dodge styling cues while creating a new persona for Dakota.

“The new 2008 Dodge Dakota was redesigned to broaden its appeal to younger customers with active lifestyles,” said Tom Loveless, Director – Dodge Marketing and Global Communications. “Dodge Dakota will attract 25- to 35-year-old individuals who need a vehicle to meet a variety of needs. Depending on an owners’ lifestyle, the 2008 Dodge Dakota may be equipped for work or play, but every Dakota is equipped with capability and versatility.”

Powertrain selections
Dodge trucks have always earned a reputation as bold, powerful and capable. The powerful and capable parts of the equation in the 2008 Dodge Dakota begin with powertrain choices, which include a new V-8 engine — the only V-8 option available in the mid-size pickup segment.

The new 4.7-liter V-8 offers better fuel economy, power and torque than the previous 4.7-liter High Output engine, while at the same time delivering improvements in refinement. The new 4.7-liter V-8 incorporates two spark plugs per cylinder (the only Chrysler Group engine to do so, other than the 5.7-liter HEMI®), increased compression ratio, improved cylinder-head port flow and a new combustion system. The result is 290 horsepower, a 25 percent increase; and 320 lb.-ft. of torque, a 10 percent increase. The new engine is also capable of operating on E85 ethanol fuel, making the Dodge Dakota equipped with this engine a Flexible Fuel Vehicle (FFV).

Refinement improvements in the new 4.7-liter V-8 result from significant revisions to the induction system, a lightweight piston/rod assembly and reduced accessory drive noise through lower accessory drive speed. Engine smoothness at idle is enhanced with a new valve-lash adjuster system. The new 4.7-liter V-8 is also equipped with Electronic Throttle Control.

The new 2008 Dodge Dakota comes standard with a 3.7-liter Magnum® V-6 engine producing 210 horsepower and 235 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine also comes with Electronic Throttle Control for positive throttle response, and exhaust gas recirculation to help lower emissions.

A first-for-the-segment remote starter for more convenience is standard on both the 3.7-liter and 4.7-liter engines in the 2008 Dodge Dakota.

The new 2008 Dodge Dakota’s powerplants are backed up by a choice of a six-speed manual transmission, standard on all V-6 equipped 2008 Dodge Dakota models except Laramie; a four-speed automatic with overdrive available with Dakota’s V-6 engine; and a five-speed automatic available on V-8-equipped models.

For more capability when traction is at a premium, the new 2008 Dodge Dakota may be equipped with a transfer case featuring two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive with locked high and low ranges, or an available transfer case with full-time four-wheel drive as well as selections for locked high and low ranges. The 2007 Dodge Dakota is the only pickup in its segment to offer full-time four-wheel drive.

New look, more model choices
In addition to powerful and capable, Dodge trucks are also known as bold.

For that part of the equation, the 2008 Dodge Dakota’s exterior includes a newly styled hood, grille, front fascia, rear spoiler, fenders and headlamps. The front end has been designed to improve aerodynamics and features better fit and gap management. The hood surface was designed to signify power and further amplify the drop-fendered, signature look for Dodge trucks. With these styling enhancements, the “face” of the 2008 Dodge Dakota is better aligned with the rest of the Dodge truck lineup.

Like the Dodge Nitro, headlamps are rectangular units primarily for a contemporary appearance, but also to maximize the surface area for better forward lighting. Reflectors are deep-set behind each lense to achieve a serious demeanor.

All-new fascias better integrate with the restyled grille and incorporate fog lamps. The 2008 Dodge Dakota’s tailgate includes a new spoiler that helps smooth air flow over the rear of the truck to improve fuel economy, and the top surface of the cargo box has a new protective surface.

“The Dodge truck DNA is well-understood in the marketplace. We are creators of trucks with a distinct flair for style and no compromise in function,” said Ralph Gilles, Vice President – Jeep®/Truck and Color and Trim Studios, and Specialty Vehicles, Chrysler Group Design. “We restyled the 2008 Dodge Dakota to reflect that DNA in a package that presents the Dakota as both a sporty lifestyle vehicle and a work truck.”

For 2008, the Dodge Dakota will again be offered in two body styles – Extended Cab and Crew Cab – and six trim levels: ST, SXT, SLT, TRX4, Sport and Laramie.

Interior loaded with form and function
The new 2008 Dodge Dakota’s interior includes a new instrument panel, center console and accent finishes, and several new interior storage choices.

“The interior is designed to provide an ergonomically friendly cockpit with improved comfort, utility and thoughtful storage amenities to complement a variety of lifestyles,” said Gilles.

The 2008 Dodge Dakota Extended Cab’s available Full Swing rear access doors open nearly 170 degrees — unique in the segment — to an interior with class-leading room and seating for five. With rear seats folded, up to 30 cubic feet of storage space is available. A total of six storage hooks are located on the Extended Cab’s rear interior panel.

Separately, the 2008 Dodge Dakota Crew Cab offers best-in-class room – 37.1 cubic feet — and seating for up to six. With rear seats folded, a new under-seat storage system, a first for Dodge Dakota, is easily accessible. This system includes a unique, collapsible and removable cargo management system that enables gear to be organized and taken anywhere.

Other storage options are provided throughout the interior. For example, an additional storage bin is located above the glove box, providing easy access for everyday items. An all-new center console incorporates cup holders with modular inserts and a pull-out bin specifically designed to hold electronics such as an MP3 player (which can be plugged into any of the 2007 Dodge Dakota’s audio systems), cell phone or Personal Digital Assistant. An additional power outlet is also provided.

Seating is available with YES Essentials® Worry Free Fabric, which is stain-resistant, odor-resistant and anti-static. Heated bench seats are available in the 2008 Dodge Dakota for the first time.

Seating options include an available 40/20/40 split-bench front seat with a folding center armrest. The 2008 Dodge Dakota Extended Cab is available with 40/40 rear-folding seats, while Crew Cab models have a standard 60/40 split-folding rear seat.

Electronic choices include AM-FM stereo radios with MP3 capability and available SIRIUS Satellite Radio that delivers more than 125 channels of music, sports, news, talk and weather. Also available as stand-alone options are a 508-watt SoundBox system (available on Extended Cab models) and a DVD navigation system with turn-by-turn directions. A power accessory delay, standard on all 2008 Dodge Dakotas, allows power functions, including radio, to operate after the vehicle is turned off.

Dodge Dakota = versatility
The foundation of the new 2008 Dodge Dakota is a ladder-type frame, with main rails formed to precision tolerances under liquid pressure and fully boxed for strength and rigidity. All 2008 Dodge Dakotas feature independent front suspension with coil-over shock absorbers. The result is identical ride height for two- and four-wheel-drive models, which contributes to smooth ride and handling characteristics.

The 2008 Dodge Dakota continues to offer the largest and longest standard cargo bed in its class: 6-foot-6-inches in the Extended Cab. Built-in utility rails make cargo box tie-downs infinitely adjustable. The 2008 Dodge Dakota’s dual-position tailgate may be secured in a mid-position, which provides support for extra-wide or -long cargo laid on top of wheel wells and extending beyond the end of the bed.

The new 2008 Dodge Dakota also continues to wear the crown for highest tow ratings in the mid-size pickup market, with towing ability of up to 7,050 pounds.

As a complete package, the 2008 Dodge Dakota is as safe as it is capable and versatile. Up front, octagonal front frame rail tips collapse rearward in an impact in order to absorb energy and deter force from the cabin. An anti-lock brake system is standard on rear wheels, and available on all four wheels.

Advance multi-stage driver and front passenger air bags are standard, and supplemental side-curtain air bags are available. Rear head restraints on Crew Cab models, which are designed for the driver’s rearward visibility, have a foam-padded structure for increased protection.

•	Significant improvement in fuel economy
•	More than 25-percent horsepower increase
•	More than 10-percent torque increase

Auburn Hills, Mich. - Chrysler Group’s new 4.7-liter V-8 is engineered to deliver significantly enhanced customer experience and value, increasing fuel economy while simultaneously improving performance by 60 horses to 290 horsepower. Peak torque is up over 10 percent, to 320 lb.-ft. These efficiency and performance gains are not at the expense of refinement, however, as noise, vibration and harshness have been minimized.

“The Chrysler Group continues to push the boundaries of engine technology, substantially increasing fuel-efficiency, performance and refinement,” said Bob Lee, Vice President - Powertrain Product Engineering Team, Chrysler Group. “Chrysler Group knows that while pickup customers always want more torque and power, fuel economy is becoming more important as fuel prices trend upward. Like our industry-leading HEMI®, this new engine represents a win-win for our customers.”

More from the official press release after the jump…

The new 4.7-liter V-8 follows the HEMI® lead in using two spark plugs per cylinder, and leverages increased compression ratio, improved cylinder head port flow and a new slant/squish combustion system design to substantially increase fuel economy, power and torque.

Refinement improvements result from careful system engineering, including significant revisions to the induction system, reduced reciprocating mass via a lightweight piston/rod assembly, and reduced accessory drive noise through lower accessory drive speed. A new normally open valve lash adjuster system enables improvement in engine smoothness at idle. Additionally, electronic throttle control smoothes the driving experience.

The new 4.7-liter V-8 engine will be manufactured at the Mack Avenue Engine Complex in Detroit. Dodge Dakota will be manufactured at Warren Truck Assembly in Warren, Mich. Both will be available this summer.
